Lyrics

Why do you build me up (build me up) buttercup, baby
Just to let me down (let me down) and mess me around?
And then worst of all (worst of all) you never call, baby
When you say you will (say you will) but I love you still
I need you (I need you) more than anyone, darlin’
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up) buttercup, don’t break my heart
“I’ll be over at ten, ” you told me time and again
But you’re late, I wait around and then (bah dah dah)
I went to the door, I can’t take any more
It’s not you, you let me down again
baby, baby, try to find
(Hey, hey, hey) a little time and I’ll make you mine
(Hey, hey, hey) I’ll be home
I’ll be beside the phone waiting for you
Ooh ooh ooh, ooh ooh ooh
Why do you build me up (build me up) buttercup, baby
Just to let me down (let me down) and mess me around?
And then worst of all (worst of all) you never call, baby
When you say you will (say you will) but I love you still
I need you (I need you) more than anyone, darlin’
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up) buttercup, don’t break my heart
You were my toy but I could be the boy you adore
If you’d just let me know (bah dah dah)
Although you’re untrue, I’m attracted to you all the more
Why do I need you so?
baby, baby, try to find
I, I, I need you more than anyone, baby
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up) buttercup

  2. When I hear this song — one of my all time favorites — I can't help but wonder if when it was being written and recorded, the songwriter and the performers actually realized how fantastic this was. Did they really, really know? Or did they think, "Well this is a decent tune that might be kinda catchy. Let's see what happens." I'd like to think that there was a realization that what was unfolding was going to be absolute magic.

  3. So, I literally wrote a movie plot in my head when I listened to this song. I don’t think of happiness, I think of a future serial killer who’s mentally insane.

  4. This song from a wild youth always makes me happy and content……………..great lyrics and movement from an amazing group that left us way too soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. I have the original 45. I used to play it loud and constantly when I was 11 years old. I'm sure I drove my parents crazy. Lol Still sounds great. Such an enduring song. So funny to hear the young playing it now…Baby Boomers grew up with the best music. Yay we did. No wonder younger ppl are still listening to it in 2020/21.
